Safety is of the highest importance for space travel.
The failure of individual components can result in catastrophic consequences. Therefore, all components must be functioning properly at all times. This particularly applies to safety components. This is not an easy task, since design configurations are always close to the limit during development.
With these requirements, the engineers of the ISS placed their trust in R+W. Zero maintenance safety couplings, consisting of special materials, provide driveline separation in the event of a torque overload, and fully meet the demanding conditions for this special application, allowing systems to be placed back into operation without the need for any spare parts.
