FAQ - Torque Limiters, flexible Shaft Couplings and Line Shafts
Advantages of a Bellows type miniature Coupling in an Encoder
Q) What
are the advantages of a bellows type miniature coupling in an encoder?
A) Flexible encoder couplings
need to exhibit an especially low restoring force under
shaft misalignment, as any type of radial loading should
be minimized in most cases. In the case of high resolution
rotary encoders, the torsional stiffness of the encoder
coupling needs to be high, as even the drag torque
of the encoder bearings can cause less rigid couplings
to twist slightly. Bellows type miniature couplings
typically have a higher number of corrugations in the
bellows, increasing the ability of the coupling to
flex easily with very little compromise to torsional
stiffness.
